Harnessing Social Media to Educate On Western Water Issues

Teal Lehto, known as Western Water Girl, is celebrated as a Hydro20 honoree for her innovative use of social media to educate and empower millions about water conservation and policy.

After facing rejection from county commissioners for a position on the Southwest Basin Roundtable, which contributes to the Colorado Water Plan, Lehto turned to TikTok to create her own platform.

Her content, which has garnered millions of views, breaks down complex issues like the Colorado River crisis into accessible, actionable information, fostering public empowerment and water security awareness.

Lehto recognizes the power of social media, particularly for reaching young audiences, and challenges the dismissal of platforms like TikTok as vital tools for communication and civic engagement. One of her standout videos raised awareness about a Navajo Nation hospital unable to open due to a lack of running water—an issue that was later resolved.

Encouraging others to leverage their smartphones as tools for change, Lehto inspires individuals to create content and advocate for sustainable water solutions. Her ability to engage and educate through social media has made her a powerful voice in shaping a sustainable water future.

Teal Lehto’s innovative approach to water advocacy through digital platforms has earned her a well-deserved place among the Hydro20 honorees.
