Fighting Lead in Drinking Water Through Community Partnerships

Dan Tedesco, leader of Brita’s dedicated lead reduction initiative, is celebrated as a Hydro20 honoree for his work partnering with over 320 communities across the U.S. to combat lead contamination in drinking water.

By collaborating with water utilities, Tedesco ensures pitcher filters are provided to residents during the critical transition period after lead service line replacements, addressing the ongoing risk of lead contamination and transforming moments of uncertainty into safety and support.

Tedesco’s efforts have been pivotal in cities like Pittsburgh, an early leader in tackling its lead pipe crisis. A decade ago, following a lead exceedance issue, Pittsburgh began distributing filters even before establishing a formal program, a step that rebuilt community trust. Tedesco’s partnership with the city has supported its aggressive lead service line replacement program, ensuring every resident receives a pitcher filter post-replacement to maintain safe drinking water.

To meet municipal needs, Tedesco has dedicated a portion of Brita’s supply chain to provide specialized pitcher filters exclusively for communities, enabling rapid response to urgent demands.

Inspired by the tireless work of utility leaders and professionals, he admires the complex labor, materials, and planning involved in lead service line replacements, driving his commitment to support their efforts.

Dan Tedesco’s leadership in providing accessible filtration solutions and fostering community partnerships has earned him a well-deserved place among the Hydro20 honorees.
